It may have been David Attenborough who first inspired us to appreciate nature, but now it is up to us to do our part and by taking action. According to a studying conducted by IBM and the National Retail Federation, nearly 70% of North Americans prefer eco-friendly products. Americans aren’t the only ones who care about the environment, a global survey found that 8 out of every 10 people also value sustainable options.
This is great news for our planet! Many people are looking for change and we are here to help.
What does saving the planet look like? It looks like the faces of people campaigning and spreading awareness, it is donating to earth-focused organizations such as Project Aware, and it is taking the steps in your home to make lifestyle changes. Luckily, we are all not alone in this eco-mission and we can all learn from each other.

Evaluating the eco-friendliness of a product also includes packaging. Plastic bottles containing liquid soap, for obvious reasons, are not eco-friendly because they are not reusable and are created from plastic. Additionally, we often use 7 times the amount of liquid soap than solid soap. That is a lot of wasted product, which also affects your wallet!
Instead, consider finding a solid bar of soap that either comes with no packaging, or with a recyclable cardboard paper package. There is an increasing demand for bars of soap, which means more options for us to choose from! Many brands have innovated their soaps by focusing on using only natural ingredients. And as we know, many natural ingredients have amazing health benefits and wonderful natural scents. Peppermint, vanilla, almond, honey…so many to choose from!
2. Soap Pump Dispenser
Some of us just aren’t fans of the soap bars —which is totally okay! If this is the case, there are still options available. Reusable soap dispensers are a great alternative. They help control the amount of soap being used and if you have a refill station in your area that offers liquid soap, you are one lucky duck! Refills stations are a great resource to use to help eliminate plastic waste.
What are refill stations? They are stores that allow you to bring your own reusable containers, jars, and bottles to restock products in an eco-friendly manner. This process eliminates the packaging and waste that we usually obtain when we purchase a product. Consider checking your local area to see if there are refill stations in your area that offer liquid soaps.
Around 30% of all plastic garbage ends up in our oceans. Among these items that float around our oceans is nylon floss. These plastic flosses pose a huge threat to our marine-life because of their durability and material. Durable nylon flosses easily wrap around marine life which threatens their ability to live. Underwater creatures also end up consuming these plastics —and I don’t know about you, but a belly full of plastic does not sound fun! If you would like to learn more about the threat of plastic floss consider reading Why Plastic Dental Floss Is Just As CATASTROPHIC As The Plastic Straw.
Now the answer IS NOT to stop flossing since brushing your teeth only reaches 65% of the plaque that builds up in your teeth, so flossing is important to reach the remaining plaque. We just need to adjust the resources we use for products such as biodegradable algae floss. This eco-floss is created using renewable and natural resources. Most importantly it is house-compostable, which means after use, it breaks down into healthy dirt for gardens. In other words, it will NOT end up in our oceans.
On average, most people use around 350 single-use plastic floss picks a year. And according to a study conducted by the University of Georgia, estimated around 4.8 million and 12.7 million metric tons of plastic waste make it to the ocean every year.
Floss picks are still a great option because they help reduce the amount of floss used per session. On average, when we wrap floss around our fingers, we use around 12-20 inches of floss each time. With this in mind, investing in a reusable floss pick is a great way to be environmentally conscious and maintain clean teeth. An option to consider is floss picks made from durable stainless steel and titanium. They are 100% reusable and created using eco-metals which can be repurposed in the future if need be. These floss picks only require 3 inches of floss peruse, which is drastically lower than 12-20 inches! This eco-option vastly reduces plastic waste, and the picks can be paired with biodegradable floss. A 100% plastic-free option!
One of the simplest switches is choosing a bamboo toothbrush over a plastic one. These bamboo toothbrushes last just as long as their plastic counterpart and they are super affordable. The toothbrush handles can also be disposed of in a home compost bin and they take about 6 months to decompose. The best part…they can be bought in bulk! Bulk buying is a great solution to reducing waste from the packaging and travel time resources.
