Why Being Eco-friendly is Good For Your Mental Health

by Jessica Noble on May 03, 2021

It is no secret, being eco-friendly has positive benefits on not only our environment but also our mental health. It feels awesome to be a part of something that creates positive ripples and waves to many facets of life. Read on to get the expanded version on why being eco-friendly is so awesome!

1. Gives you a sense of purpose by becoming a part of something bigger than ourselves

Studies have shown that lacking purpose can contribute to feeling lost, stressed, and anxious. According to Dr. Jared Scherz, a Gestalt psychologist based in New Jersey, creating a sense of purpose “instills a sense of worth, and it gives people something to be passionate about and have something to talk about with others.”

Joining the green movements also allows us to create deeper connections with nature which in return helps stimulate positive emotions. This leads to happier moods and results in a higher quality of life. Additionally, being eco-friendly is a community effort and contributing the bigger picture is not only fun, but it helps empower your mind!

2. Teaches you to be mindful and embrace minimalism

Those who engage in eco-friendly practices tend to foster a minimalist mindset. By becoming more aware of our consumption we begin to understand that we should only take what we need.

By embracing this lifestyle, we can save money by spending less and feel fulfilled by what we already have. Remember less is definitely more! In addition, consumers are starting to realize that experiences bring more happiness over material items.

Researcher, Amit Kumar from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin, conducted a study by recruiting 2,635 adults. They found that the people who consumed experiences felt a higher sense of happiness over those who participated in materialistic consumption. A possible explanation to this result may be due to our memories. Experiences can create a longer lasting effect on happiness and build good memories we can look back on, while the perceived value of a material item weakens over time.

Minimalism Inspiration

“Minimalism is a tool we use to live a meaningful life. There are no rules. Rather, minimalism is simply about stripping away the unnecessary things in your life so you can focus on what’s important.” – Joshua Fields Millburn

3. Lowers the risk of developing stress related disorders

Households with eco-friendly practices help teach adults and kids to appreciate nature, therefore creating a mental connection. This connection improves cognitive development and also increases our ability to moderate emotions with less stress.

In particular, studies have shown that children in school who are exposed to natural environments have a boosted concentration. This also applies to adults, those who create a connection with nature and spend time surrounded by green tend to perform better at work and in other aspects of their lives.

Humanity Quote

“Allow nature’s peace to flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.” – John Muir

4. Boost mental wellness by creating connections with other people who participate in eco activities

Belonging to community has been known to create long-lasting benefits to mental health. It helps reduce the chance of experiencing episodes of depression, lowers stress, and fosters a feeling of creating social bonds.

People who are part of an eco-movement community tend to also have a higher inclination towards helping others since they experience stronger bonds with a heightened sense of purpose. It also feels incredibly uplifting to lead a life that has a lower impact on the environment.

Nature Quote

“Deep human connection is ... the purpose and the result of a meaningful life - and it will inspire the most amazing acts of love, generosity, and humanity.” – Melinda gates

Next Steps.

Spend time in nature and reflect on what little things you can do to start leading a mindful and purposeful life. Small changes create momentum which leads to bigger changes. It might be as simple as switching from plastic floss to biodegradable and eco-friendly floss to start your wave of change. Just remember, once your eco-journey begins, you will be hooked for life! And we promise it will be a decision full of fulfillment.
